Engaging Indigenous Youth: The Evolution of McGill’s Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp

During this moderated panel, two Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp founders, as well as a past camp participant (and current coordinator), will explore the camp’s beginnings and its legacy. Together, we will explore the role the camp plays in helping to empower Indigenous youth and encourage them to consider careers in the health sciences.
Moderator:
Dr. Kent Saylor, MD, FRCPC, is a member of the Mohawk Nation and the Director of the Indigenous Health Professions Program at McGill University. Since 2000, he has worked as a consultant pediatrician as part of the Northern and Native Child Health Program of the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the MUHC, and has provided care for numerous Indigenous children throughout Quebec.
Panellists:
Paige Isaac, a Mi’gmaq from Listuguj and a McGill alumna, worked at McGill for nearly a decade as the Indigenous Community Outreach Coordinator and then as Associate Director of the First Peoples’ House. She recently returned to Listuguj where she co-founded two community organizations, Ta’n Wetapegsulti’gw and Nous Trois – Nesisieg.
Waneek Horn-Miller hails from the Mohawk communities of Kahnawake and Ohsweken. One of Canada’s few Indigenous Olympians, she is an advocate for building Indigenous sport and has worked with the Assembly of First Nations to develop their sport, fitness and health strategy. A former director of community relations for the MMIWG Inquiry, she continues to support the goal of the Inquiry and advocates on Indigenous issues to help build healthy and prosperous communities.
Alex Allard-Gray is a member of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq First Nation and works as the Outreach Administrator with the Indigenous Health Professions Program (IHPP) at McGill University. Alex participated in the second Eagle Spirit High Performance Camp in 2006, which led him to complete his B.Sc. in Physiology and Kinesiology at McGill. Alex now helps coordinate and plan the Eagle Spirit Science Futures Camp.
