Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
2001 - Present'

With over 200 faculty members, the Department of Oncology is the fifth largest in the Faculty of Medicine. As Chair, I need to rely on a competent and dedicated team. Gayle Shinder is my Senior Advisor for Academic Programs. She provides invaluable support to me and to the department at large, making sure that our mission to the university and to the community is properly fulfilled. She has been an integral member of the Department for over 20 years and been engaged in a wide range of departmental activities. Her research background, attention to detail and superb writing and editorial skills have been of tremendous value for researching and drafting cyclical review documents, annual reports and proposals, and critically reviewing and editing faculty promotion and tenure dossiers prior to submission to the Department. Shinder’s knowledge about the Department’s history, its various programs and divisions, its educational programs and the academic pursuits of its members has been of great benefit to me as well as to faculty members. In addition to her multi-faceted departmental role, Shinder has led the development of a new graduate program in Oncology, the first in Canada. As Editor-in-Chief of Preventive Medicine, a prominent public health journal, I rely on her as Deputy Editor to review and triage over 2000 manuscript submissions annually, to expertly manage all journal-related emails and to get involved in writing and publishing letters and book reviews from the Editorial Office.
