Dr. Edward Slapcoff, B.Sc.(’54), D.D.S.(‘56.), F.R.C.D.(C) is an exceptional oral surgeon and educator. As an alumnus of McGill for both his undergraduate and graduate degrees, Ed went on to teach at McGill University and the Université de Montreal for more than 60 years. His career has been marked by absolute devotion to student learning. He takes a principled approach to teaching, ensuring his students are both adept at standard procedures and able to troubleshoot the unpredictable. In addition, Ed is well known for his kindness and compassion; he is an advocate for all students and exemplifies what it means to be a caring professional who takes the time to listen and understand before drawing conclusions. Besides teaching at the clinics of two Montreal universities, in both English and French, Ed has been involved with apprenticeship and mentorship programs at McGill and was instrumental in raising funds for the Faculty of Dentistry during some precarious times in the late 80s and 90s. Ed is also one of the original members of the mobile dental clinic, and has always spoken out and acted with integrity when it comes to protecting the rights of populations who are disadvantaged. Ed’s long career as an oral surgeon has seen him work in private practice, clinics and hospitals across the island of Montreal. He is an engaged community member, at McGill and in the city at large, and is truly one of McGill’s unsung heroes.
