Lucy E. Potter, first woman to head a student publication

In 1897, Lucy E. Potter became the first woman to head a McGill student publication, the McGill Outlook. It was the third student newspaper at McGill, following the monthly McGill Gazette and the McGill Fortnightly.

The Outlook came in response to students wanting a more regularly published paper, with Editor-in-Chief Potter writing in the first issue that “no one cared to read news a fortnight old.” Student journalism and academic journal publication remain strong at McGill to this day, with many student-run newspapers and departmental journals published year-round.
